Dr. Zimmerman, owner and physical therapist, was the first board certified orthopedic specialist (OCS) in the state of Nebraska who is also an athletic trainer (ATC) and former strength & conditioning specialist (8 years prior to any other physical therapist in Nebraska). He earned his specialization in orthopedic physical therapy (OCS) in 2003 and has a special interest in back injuries, shoulder rehabilitation, and throwing athletes. With over 25 years of treating and rehabilitating patients under his belt, he has some of the most extensive training and experience of any physical therapist in Nebraska and is an authority in sports physical therapy. He has been getting professional, college and high school athletes back on the field with great success since 1990. Dr. Zimmerman earned his BS and MS in Athletic Training/Exercise Science at the University of Iowa. He received his Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) from St. Ambrose University in 1996 and Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) in 2012. He became a certified athletic trainer (ATC) in 1991 and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) in 2001. He has had the pleasure of teaching students, athletic trainers and other physical therapists since 1993.
On a more personal note, Dr. Zimmerman has experience, not only as a physical therapist, but also as a parent dealing with the pressure and stressors (along with the fun!) of being a working parent with active children. He is the proud father of four children who have all been very active in sports, and who, unfortunately have experienced some injuries along the way, the most significant of which required an ACL/knee reconstruction surgery and another that required an ankle reconstruction surgery. These personal experiences have provided him with a unique perspective and a healthy appreciation for the challenges of dealing with an injured child whose identity revolves being an active athlete. Having been down this road himself, he understands the emotional impact of having an injured child, and is able to take into consideration the stress of dealing with coaches and the demands of balancing practice, school and injury rehabilitation.
In his personal time, Dr. Zimmerman enjoys watching his kids compete/perform in all their various activities, which have ranged from soccer and football to music and robotics competitions. Outside of spending time with family, he also enjoys kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, and cooking (especially on the grill).
He is clearly driven as a lifelong learner, and this, of course, has steadily built his clinical expertise over the years. Most importantly though, he executes his trade with the highest regard for his patients’ own goals. With this in mind, he customizes each patient’s care to meet their individual needs. His guiding principal has always been (and always will be) to treat his clients like he would treat a member of his own family.

Originally from Burwell, NE. Blake brings a fresh mind into the fold here at Specialized Physical Therapy. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he obtained his Bachelors of Science in Nutrition, Health and Exercise Science. Blake then went on to attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center as a Regent Scholar to obtain his Doctorate of Physical Therapy graduating in May of 2020. Blake decided to pursue physical therapy because he grew up on a farm and got to fix things and be hands on. His primary treatment interests include orthopedic rehab as well as return to sports. His treatment strategy is to work with patients to perform a thorough exam to discover the source of the problem, and then build a treatment plan around the patient’s goals. When you don’t see Blake in the clinic, you can find him out golfing, boating, meeting up with friends, and cooking! Blake will be splitting his time between our Maple and UBA clinics.
